Waiting for a deer to come along can be a long and tedious process that requires patience, but there is no need to suffer while waiting, which is why a hunting seat cushion is the perfect partner on a long wait in your tree stand or ground blind.
We have the pleasure of testing a variety of cushions throughout this season and we found a few products that performed well throughout our tests and have a strong reputation from its customers.
Best Hunting Seat Cushion Reviewed and Rated
1. Beard Buster Jumbo Seat
- Jumbo seat dimensions -12"x15"x3"
- PVC coated waterproof bottom
- Closed cell foam top and bottom, won't soak up water
I found myself using the Beard buster jumbo most of the time and it turned into my favorite cushion of all time, however, my partner didnt like it all.
Its thick, comfortable and comes at an affordable price. In addition to this its PVC coated which means its waterproof. the water peals just like it would on a plastic bag which was a featured we found very useful when we encountered a rainstorm.
On the top side of the cushion its a squared layer of foam that is firm and comfortable, the middle layer is a softer resulting in a thick pillow that makes the waiting a lot more pleasent.
if you want to bring it along to your hunting destination you can easily hang it on your backpack with the snap hook attachment attacked on the back of the pillow.
its soft, comfortable, waterproof and durable so what is there not to like? As I mentioned earlier my partner didnt like it at all and the reason for this is that the cushion tends to be squished flat if you are a heavy fella and this was the case for my partner.
If you are lightweight this is a super comfortable cushion that is just to love, however, if you are on the heavier the Northeast Seat is my recommendation since it has a thicker cushion, although it has a higher price tag.
- 3″ Thick and comfortable
- Waterproof and PVC coated
- Three layers of cushion
- Flattens out if too much weight.
2. Northeast Seat
- Three-layer design provides warmth cushioning and protection...
- Aluminum carabineer clip makes it easy to carry
- Premium-grade foam for professional grade performance
If you want the best cushion seat on the market then this is our top choice. Its a premium hunting seat with 3 layered cushion construction resulting in maximum comfort.
What makes the seat so unique is its thermal barrier which helps to keep the heat by trapping it with the Softek closed-cell foam. In addition to this its a thick layer of Comfotek which is commonly used in furniture due to its soft and comfy feel.
On the bottom of the seat, there is a hardened layer that helps to keep out the cold and wetness of the ground or hunting seat.
With its freezeproof design, supreme comfortable paddings and clever design the Northeast seat is a hard product to beat. The only downside is that its more expensive than other seats, but the supreme quality and comfort is far worth the extra cost.
- Antifreeze design
- Holds on the heat
- High quality
- Thick and comfortable
3. Fatboy Comfort Cushion
- Hunting Cushion: 1.5 inch heavy duty utility strap with side...
- Hand sewn Fabric: ComforTex Fabric is waterproof and noise...
- Outdoor cushion : High resilience foam for outstanding...
The Fatboy is one of the pricier cushions on this list, but it’s worth every penny. The Fatboy is similar to the Northseat in terms of thickness and comfort that goes to show off its quality.
It’s built with Hunts Sitecore technology and a triple foam design that helps to distribute your body weight evenly on the whole surface. This prevents the seat from flattening resulting in maximum comfort.
On the outside of the cushion, there is a layer of Comfortex fabric which silent and helps to keep your but dry because of its waterproof design. It has a beautiful camo design that is UV protective which means it won’t fade by the sun or in the washing machine.
Our favorite feature with the Fatboy is its Griptek fabric that prevents the cushion from slipping even on a wet stone or hunting chair. It allows you to sit in a laid back position as well without the cushion slipping forward which we found to be a problem with most hunting seats.
As usual, you get a strap attached on the back of the seat making it easy to attach to the backpack.
There is no major downside or negative aspect of the Fatboy although the square design dosent suit all hunting chairs, this is a rare case, but something to be aware of.
- Thick and comfortable
- Waterproof and silent
- Anti grip material
- Durable and made of high-quality materials
- Square shaped design
4. Hunters Specialties Cushion
- Self Inflating Seat Cushion
- Water Resistant
- Adjustable Belt
The Hunter Specialities holds by its name because it’s truly special. It has a unique design that allows you to sit on a cushion of air. Instead of using foam the Hunters seat uses an air valve system that makes it possible to inflate, adjust and deflate the cushion. There is no need to blow or pump up the seat because of its unique design.
On the backside, there is a large strap that can be hung around the back of the chair or be used as a transportation strap.
Its a versatile and different seat that is perfect for hunters on a tight budget, but it has some major flaws and downsides. It dosent provide you with the same thickness and comfort as you can expect from the Fatboy.
The air isn’t as comfy as the foam because it’s not as stable. We found it do be a bit annoying since we had to adjust our sitting position every 5 minutes because sometimes it was to firm or simply positioned awkwardly.
Its not a hunting seat we would recommend, only if you are on a super tight budget and can’t afford anything else.
- Easy to install and setup
- Easy to fit in the backpack
- Small and uncomfortable
- Moves around
- Original ThermaSeat is a MUST-HAVE for anyone who sits...
- Produced with Softek closed-cell foam (now made even...
- Perfect for sitting on WET GROUND, TREE STUMPS, OR METAL...
Therm-A is a slim cushion that comes in both a 1″ and 2″ model. Featured with NEP`s Softek foam you get a seat that is both comfortable and lightweight.
The NEP foam helps to trap the heat inside the seat, resulting in a warmer sitting experience. Because of its slimmer size, it fits perfectly in most hunting chairs and its easy to carry around because of its weight.
Because of the slimmer side, you won’t get the same comfort as the Fatboy, but it’s far better than other seats in the same price range. The padding is enough to smooth out uneven surfaces, small rocks and add a layer between you and the cold ground.
We didnt experience this, but a few customers have reported that the glue between the pads wear out easily resulting that the thick pad comes apart from the slim pad. We were disappointed to hear about this, but again the price is very low so a few flaws were expected.
It’s an ok pad that works well for providing some space between you and the cold ground, but we recommend you to spend some more to get a thicker pad of higher quality and comfort.
Things to look for when looking for the best Hunting Seat Cushion
We included just a limited amount of the cushion seats out there so it’s understandable if you want to find another brand or product that you have had previous experience with which is why we made this short guide.
Size and thickness
Make sure to purchase a cushioned seat that fits in your hunting chair. This is an obvious step, but you would be surprised how many who forget this step. On each product, there is information on lenght, height, and thickness making it easy to choose one that suits you and your chair.
Next is the thickness. Hunting cushions come in a variety of thicknesses ranging from 1-4″ inches. All works, but we found that the thicker pads usually provides the best comfort.
This is a feature that is more important than you think. Having a waterproof cushion is essential to have a comfortable and warm hunting experience. Still, if you are sitting in a ground blind all day having a waterproof cushion is still an important feature.
Still, if you are sitting inside all day the cushion can get soggy when you walk towards your ground blind or treestand. Most hunting cushions are made of foam, if this get wet it will stay wet for a long time. If the cushion get wet you are better off sitting on a dry and hard hunting chair instead.
We recommend you to look for waterproof fabric such as PVC coated layers to ensure that you and your cushion stays dry.
How are you going to transport the cushion? Most cushions are too thick to fold or pack in the backpack, but a lot of them have either a loop, hoop or strap which allows you to attach it to your backpack or gear.
Having an element that allows you to attach it on your gear is essential, if you need to carry it in your hand you will quickly get tired and not worth the hassle.
Some pads are inflatable meaning they can be packed in the bag and later on filled with air to provide you with a cushion. These can be great if you are on a long hike, but they won’t provide you with the same level of comfort as the foam-based cushions.
It’s nice to have something soft to sit on, but wouldnt it be better if it was a warm cushion? Some pads are great at trapping your body heat resulting in a warm and comfortable pad. In addition to this, there are a few products with built-in heaters although they tend to be pricier.
If you have the budget for it I suggest you look for a cushion that either trap body heat or have a built-in heating function since it’s a luxury feature that really helps to make the hunting experience as comfortable as possible.
Some of these tend to provide a massive amount of heat resulting in a burning feeling, so make sure to read the reviews on the product before you decide to purchase one.
Why should you get a hunting chair pad?
If you want to take down as many big games as possible you need to be patients and wait. This can result in hours of sitting and waiting for the deer to come around. These hours can either be comfortable or uncomfortable depending on your sitting position and comfort.
We hunting because it’s fun and enjoyable at least that’s why I do it, and purchasing a cushion has helped me to achieve this. If I have pain in my lower back or but then I easily get frustrated or restless, having a cushion prevents this.
A lot of hunting chairs today have some sort of padding or cushion pre-installed, but these are far from what you could expect from a separate cushion.
All the pads on this list work well, but some works better than others. We found the Bear Buster Jumbo to provide the best balance between comfort, thickness, and weight distribution. In addition to this, it’s waterproof resulting in a perfect cushion for most hunters.
In terms of quality, it’s durable and made of high-quality materials resulting in a hunting pad that will last you for several years.
For heavier hunters, the Fatboy is our recommendation. This provides a thicker cushion that helps to add space between you and the cold ground. If you are heavy the smaller pads tend to be squeezed together resulting in a hard pad that provides little to no extra comfort.
